Wonder Where Ballroom Dancing Came From?
While dancing itself has been around for thousands of years, social
"ballroom" style dancing for the most part began in the 1500 and
1600's
among the noblemen and women of Europe. What did these early forms of
ballroom dancing look like? In the Oscar winning movie "Shakespeare
In
Love," we can perhaps get a idea, in the elegant ball scene where Viola
(Gwyneth Paltrow) meets Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes)for the first time.
Ballroom dancing later came to be defined by the familiar "closed"
dance
position hold, where the man's right arm is around the woman. This position
probably came about because this was a time in history when men wore swords
while dancing. Since most men are right handed, it was usual to wear the
sword and scabbard on the left hand side, so the sword could be drawn
quickly with the right hand. Therefore, if the man was to put his arm around
a lady's back, she needed to be on his right, or she would keep tripping
over his sword. Something certainly guaranteed to put a quick end to the
dancing!

Perhaps no other ballroom dance has been popularized as often in recent
cinema as the Tango. Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez tango in "Shall
We
Dance?" Al Pacino does the Tango in "Scent of a Woman," and
Arnold
Schwarzeneggar in "True Lies." And Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
take to the
dance floor to tango, in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
Tango, a stylish but sultry dance, had its beginnings in society's underbelly
the brothels of Argentina in the 1880's. Immigrant laborers living in the
slums
of Buenos Aires sought escape from their difficult lives in the port city's
houses
of ill repute. The movements of the Tango became an "acting out"
of the desires
of the dancers and the music that developed forthe Tango was sad and soulful,
reflecting the desperation in the lives of these immigrants. Thus Tango was
originally a dance of desire, and of sorrow.
As the Tango gained popularity in broader society, it lost some of it's
rougher qualities and in the early 1900's became a worldwide phenomenon,
even in America. Although some well bred ladies nonetheless opted to wear
"bumpers" to protect themselves from rubbing too closely against
their
gentlemen partners.
Modern Tango is a stylish and exciting dance reflecting much of it's fiery
origins and just one of the many dances that can be explored in the exciting
world of ballroom dance. Learn more about Tango and how to do the basic

When you hear Harry Connick Jr. sing "It Had to Be You" or Frank
Sinatra
croon "The Way You Look Tonight", then the dance you want to be
doing is the
Foxtrot. Still one of the best loved and most popular ballroom dances in
America today, the Foxtrot is a great dance for beginners to learn because
it is slow and easy, yet it can also be one of the most challenging dances
for the advanced student to perfect.
The Foxtrot gets it name from a vaudeville comedian named Harry Fox who
introduced this dance in 1914 as part of his act in a New York Theater.
Harry's "dance" consisted of bouncing trotting steps set to ragtime
music.
When a theater patron asked another bystander what dance that man was doing,
he was told that was "Fox's trot," and the name stuck.
The dance was later changed somewhat to a smoother glide and perfected
to
allow dancers to stay in a contained section of the dance floor, making
it
ideal for crowded social settings. You can learn to do the Foxtrot on

From the 1920's to present day, dances with names like the Lindy
Hop, Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie-Woogie, Whip, Shag, Push,
Pony, Rock and Roll, Jive, Disco, Hustle and many more are all
variations on a dance style generally called Swing. In each
decade, these dances were invented by the younger generation
moving to the upbeat music of their day.
Swing style dances were popularized by big bands and Hollywood
movies in the 30's, 40's and 50's, and later by television shows
like American Bandstand and Soul Train. And naturally, these were
the dances with which young people occasionally scandalized their
parents, and a few years later, their children scandalized them
with a new variation.
Today there are two styles of Swing considered ballroom dances,
East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing. East Coast Swing, a
decedent of the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug, is danced in a circular
motion and has a back rock step which follows a step, a
step-touch or triple step depending on the tempo of the music.
East Coast Swing is more akin to what is generally thought of as
"Rock and Roll" style dancing.
West Coast Swing is a smoother dance, danced in a slot. Bred on
the West Coast, it is the California state dance and can be
danced to slower blues and jazz or even to slower county western
music.
Both dances have one thing in common, however, they are cool, fun
and make you feel good. You can find out more about Swing and see
on our website: http://www.seedancesite.com/learn-dances.html

One of the most popular ballroom dances, the Cha Cha, began in America
around 1954 and was derived from the Mambo. The Mambo was wildly popular
in
American dance clubs in the 1950's but was a little too fast for many
people. A Cuban violinist, is credited with inventing the Cha Cha because
he
slowed down the Mambo beat making it more appealing to dance enthusiasts.
In this slowed down version of the Mambo there was a distinct 3 count beat
or sound that people began dancing to. They first called this step the
"triple Mambo." Soon this evolved into a separate dance known
originally as
the Cha Cha Cha, and today shortened to the Cha Cha. Cha Cha consists of
two slower steps followed by 3 quick steps (the triple step or "cha
cha cha.")
The name Cha Cha Cha itself may derive from the distinct shuffling sound
the
dancers feet make in the triple step. Cha Cha also includes turns, spins
and dips,
and hip movements give it a distinct Latin American flavor, making it a
very lively
and fun dance. Cha Cha remains a very popular dance today and you can hear
the
rhythm of the Cha Cha in the music of Ricky Martin, Prince, Gloria Estefan
and
many other contemporary artists. Learn the Cha Cha basic step on our web
